The science of bio-melanin
Bio-melanin is melanin produced through biological engineering rather than extracted from animals or synthesized from petrochemicals. It is the same family of pigment molecules that protect skin, eyes, and feathers in nature, made to a defined, high-purity grade at industrial scale. Crudo Labs engineers bio-melanin as the proprietary platform behind its own products, capturing what scarce natural sources and lower-performing synthetic substitutes never could.

One ancient molecule, many jobs
Melanin is one of the oldest and most widespread biomaterials on Earth. It colors skin and hair, shields living tissue from ultraviolet light, mops up free radicals, and even appears in organisms that thrive in high-radiation environments. The reason a single pigment can do so much is structural: melanin is a complex, disordered polymer that absorbs energy across a broad range of wavelengths and dissipates it safely.
Eumelanin
Eumelanin is the dark brown-to-black form of melanin and the most studied for its protective properties. It is the form Crudo Labs engineers, because eumelanin carries the strongest UV and radical-scavenging behavior of the melanin family.
Bio-melanin vs. extracted vs. synthetic
There are three ways to get melanin. They are not equal.
Animal-extracted melanin
Harvested from natural sources such as cuttlefish ink or feathers. Genuine melanin, but scarce, variable batch to batch, and impossible to scale to industrial volumes.
Petrochemical-synthetic substitutes
Lab-made pigments that imitate melanin's color but not its full set of properties. Cheaper to make, but they do not match nature's structure or performance.
Bio-melanin (Crudo Labs)
Engineered biologically to be nature-identical, then purified to a defined grade and produced at scale. Consistent, controllable, and built to be the platform behind Crudo's own products.

Five properties, one material
Melanin's value is that one material carries properties most industries would need separate chemistries for. Each property maps to a product Crudo Labs builds.
UV and visible-light absorption
Melanin absorbs a broad band of light, the basis for sun protection and protective coatings.
Radical scavenging
As a natural antioxidant, melanin neutralizes reactive species, the mechanism behind its anti-aging interest.
Radiation shielding
Melanin is found in organisms that withstand high-radiation environments, which makes it a candidate for protecting optics in orbit.
Semiconduction
In certain states melanin conducts charge, making it a candidate material for bio-based photovoltaics.
Pigmentation
Melanin provides durable, stable color from a single material.

Pure, consistent, and made at scale
The hard part has never been making melanin. The hard part is making it pure, consistent, and in industrial volume. Crudo Labs uses a proprietary process to produce high-purity eumelanin to a defined grade, batch after batch, at lot-level consistency. That is what turns a fascinating natural pigment into a platform Crudo can build real products on.
High-purity, fermentation-derived natural melanin, characterised by 1H NMR, mass spectrometry, and FT-IR — the analytical backbone behind every product Crudo builds.
One platform. Many products.
Because the same material moves from coatings to optics to skincare to a Parkinson's research program, every new product compounds on the last. Six product lines, one platform, one body of IP. That is why Crudo Labs treats bio-melanin as a platform, not a single product.
Bio-melanin science FAQ
- What is bio-melanin?
- Bio-melanin is melanin produced through biological engineering rather than extracted from animals or synthesized from petrochemicals. Crudo Labs makes it to a defined, high-purity grade at industrial scale, the platform on which it builds its own products.
- What is eumelanin?
- Eumelanin is the dark brown-to-black form of melanin and the form with the strongest UV and radical-scavenging properties. It is the form Crudo Labs engineers.
- Why is melanin useful across so many industries?
- A single melanin molecule absorbs UV and visible light, scavenges free radicals, shields against radiation, conducts charge in certain states, and provides durable pigmentation. That breadth is why Crudo Labs calls it a platform biomaterial.
- How does Crudo Labs make melanin pure and at scale?
- Crudo Labs uses a proprietary process to produce high-purity eumelanin to a defined grade, batch after batch, at lot-level consistency, enabling industrial volumes that natural extraction cannot reach.
